Tajwid rule
Qalqalah (echoing)
القلقلة
Transliteration: Qalqalah
What it is
Qalqalah is a small echo or bouncing sound added when one of five specific letters carries a sukoon (silence). The five qalqalah letters are ق، ط، ب، ج، د — commonly memorised as 'quṭbu jaddin'.
When it applies
Any of ق، ط، ب، ج، د carries a sukoon, either in the middle of a word (small qalqalah) or at the end of a word during a pause (larger qalqalah).
How it sounds
The letter is pronounced with a slight percussive 'bounce', without adding any vowel sound. The bounce is bigger at the end of a verse than in the middle of a word.
